Information about the barrier-free Mainau
Barrier-free parks and gardens
With a few exceptions, the paths in Mainau Park are suitable for wheelchair users and people with walking difficulties. Stepless paths are marked in white on the island map, sections with steps and stairs are highlighted in pink.
But there are also special garden experiences for other disabilities (e.g. visually or hearing impaired). In the "Garden for All" there are plants at hand height for smelling and feeling as well as information boards in Braille. This gives affected families tips on how to enjoy their garden despite their disability.
Conditions for accompanying person
The accompanying person of a visitor who presents a severely disabled person's pass marked B, H and/or aG receives free admission to the island.
Toilet for all
We have set up a "toilet for all" at the mainland island entrance and in the Comturey restaurant. The two barrier-free sanitary facilities are also equipped with a height-adjustable nursing couch for adults, a patient lift and an airtight diaper pail.
Wheelchair service and electric scooters
Wheelchairs are available to borrow free of charge at the mainland and harbor entrances, especially for disabled and elderly guests. You can find out about the wheelchair accessibility of Mainau Island in advance at Wheelmap.org for more information.
Electric scooters can be hired from the Mainau Service Center (€ 15 / 3 hours, each additional hour € 5). We recommend that you make a reservation by calling +49 7531/ 303-0 or sending an e-mail to info(at)mainau.de. Please reserve an electric scooter at least 24 hours in advance of your visit. If you make a reservation by e-mail, please wait for a final confirmation.
The electric vehicles are only available in the flower year from March 21 to October 19, 2025. If you are visiting our island outside this period, please contact the Mainau Service Center Tel: +49 7531-303-0 or info(at)mainau.de. We will be happy to help you find alternative mobility aids.
