Flowering times

What blooms on Mainau Island in February?

In February, nature gradually awakens from its winter slumber and spring announces itself! During a walk on Mainau Island, you can discover the first harbingers of spring.

Snowdrops and winter aconites are in full bloom in the Metasequioa avenue. In the riverside garden under the old trees, early elfin crocuses form dense carpets of flowers. The great tits and blue tits are beginning to mating and the early spring alpine violets are appearing in the arboretum.

Please note: flowering times are approximate and depend on the weather

This information on flowering times is merely indicative, as it depends on weather conditions and annual fluctuations. The pictures shown give an impression of last year's flowering periods. We recommend that you enquire about the current flowering status before your visit to Mainau. Please feel free to contact us at info@mainau.de.

Schneeglöckchen auf Wiese

They herald the end of the cold season: The snowdrops(Galanthus nivalis) with their frost-hardy, delicate white flowers bloom in the riverside garden and perennial garden

Winterling im Februar

Eranthis hyemalis, also known as winter aconite, is a small but enchanting spring flower. Its bright yellow flowers appear as early as February and bring color to the wintry park. The winter aconite loves shady areas and likes to reproduce on its own.

Elfen-Krokusse im Ufergarten von der Insel Mainau

The elfin crocus(Crocus tommasinianus) forms dense carpets of flowers in the riverside garden. The slender, delicate flowers in light purple open in the sunshine and are a source of food for bees and other insects.

Frühlingsalpenveilchen auf Wiese

The early springcyclamen (Cyclamen coum) is another floral harbinger of spring that you can discover in our park. The perennial belongs to the primrose family and blooms in the arboretum.

Rindenstruktur des Zimt-Ahorns im Winter

The bark decoration of the cinnamon maple(Acer griseum) in the arboretum is a particular eye-catcher. The bark peels off in curled strips, giving the impression of cinnamon rolls.

Gelbe Blüte des Winterjasmins

The flowers of the winter jasmine(Jasminum nudiflorum) shine like little yellow suns. In Chinese, the olive tree plant is also translated as "the flower that welcomes spring".

Pavonienblüte

The pavonia(Triplochlamys multiflora) provides a touch of the exotic in the butterfly house. The mallow plant is also known as the Brazilian mallow.

Flamingoblume

The flamingo flower(Anthurium) can also be found in the butterfly house. The arum plant is native to Central and South America. The cob in the middle is the actual inflorescence of the flamingo flower.

Schmetterling auf roter Penthas-Blüte

The five-petal shrub(Pentas lanceolata) is also known as the Star of Egypt. This charming plant with five petals on each individual flower originally comes from Africa. Our exotic butterflies enjoy it in the butterfly house
